Your sense of sight accounts for 80% of what you see. That is why, to preserve your eye health, frequent eye checks are just as important as our other health checkups. It can help detect potential problems early and prevent many severe health conditions.
But unfortunately, for many people, the cost of medical care is a major obstacle, and they may not have access to the healthcare services they need.
Mahavir International Delhi recently organized a free eye and health check-up camp in Samudayik Kender, J. J. Colony, Bawana, Delhi, to help needy people. This initiative was jointly conducted with Gyankunj and supported by the KMG Foundation. Medical professionals such as ophthalmologists, optometrists, and general physicians were part of this camp.
For healthy eyes and to prevent vision problems, it is important to undergo regular eye check-ups. Here are a few reasons why:
Determine eye impairments, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, that unnoticeably develop over time. Regular eye check-ups can detect these conditions early on before they cause significant vision loss.
Keep an eye on any existing eye issues caused by a family history of eye disease. Timely check-ups can help detect such conditions and prevent them from worsening.
Ensure that your prescription is up-to-date and that there is no change in your eyesight number if you wear glasses or contact lenses.
Prevent eye infections caused by a variety of factors like poor hygiene, contact lenses, and exposure to environmental irritants.
Detect general health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Catching these conditions early can lead to more effective treatment and better overall health outcomes.
The primary objective of the camp was to raise awareness about eye health and provide access to free eye and general health check-ups to people who could not afford them. The camp was set up in a community center and was open to all, regardless of age, gender, or socio-economic status.
The event was a grand success, with over 350 eye and 310 general check-ups conducted in a single day. A team of experienced ophthalmologists, optometrists, and general physicians conducted the check-ups and examined people for common eye problems, including near and far vision. They also tested and examined patients’ vitals, such as blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol levels, using advanced medical equipment and technologies.
During the eye check-up, the ophthalmologists detected 12 cases of cataract, a condition in which the eye’s lens becomes cloudy and can cause vision impairment. The patients with cataracts were referred for further examination and counseling.
In addition to check-ups, free medicines and spectacles were distributed to patients. The optometrists also advised patients to follow a healthy lifestyle and wear glasses regularly in order to maintain their eye health.
