In many rural and economically disadvantaged communities, the opportunities for financial independence are limited, particularly for women. Traditional skills like sewing and embroidery, which have been passed down through generations, often go unrecognized and underutilized. Without the means to turn these skills into viable livelihoods, countless women remain trapped in cycles of poverty. The Sui Dhaaga (Thread & Needle) initiative aims to change this narrative, empowering women to harness their skills and create sustainable futures for themselves and their families.
The Sui Dhaaga initiative was born out of a desire to provide women with the tools and resources they need to achieve economic independence. Recognizing the untapped potential in traditional crafts, Gyankunj, in collaboration with the KMG Foundation, launched this program to support women in rural areas by providing them with sewing machines, training, and market access. The vision was simple: to transform a skill that had long been undervalued into a powerful tool for empowerment and economic growth. Through partnerships with local artisans, NGOs, and community leaders, the initiative began to take shape, offering not just training but a pathway to financial stability.
Since its inception, the Sui Dhaaga initiative has grown from a small pilot project into a thriving program that has touched the lives of thousands of women across various communities. What started as a modest effort in Kanjhawala has become a beacon of hope for women in West Bengal also who once had limited options for earning a living.
The program provides comprehensive training in sewing, embroidery, and other textile crafts, enabling participants to produce high-quality products that meet market demand. Alongside technical training, the initiative also offers business skills workshops, teaching women how to manage their finances, market their products, and grow their enterprises.
Initially, many women were hesitant to join the program, unsure of whether it would lead to tangible benefits. However, as success stories began to emerge—women earning their income, supporting their families, and even starting their businesses—participation grew rapidly. Today, the Sui Dhaaga initiative is a vibrant community of empowered women who are not just participants but leaders and role models in their communities.
One of the most impactful aspects of the Sui Dhaaga initiative is its focus on sustainability. The program doesn’t just provide immediate support; it creates long-term opportunities by connecting participants with markets where they can sell their products. This ensures that the skills they acquire translate into ongoing income and financial independence.
As the Sui Dhaaga initiative continues to expand, so does its commitment to the women it serves. Looking ahead, Gyankunj and the KMG Foundation plan to broaden the scope of the program, reaching more communities, introducing new crafts and skills, and deepening its impact. The vision is to create a world where every woman, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to achieve economic independence and contribute to her community’s prosperity.
